With millions of people dying each year due to physical inactivity through a plethora of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cancer, we need to actively promote physical activity not only as a lifestyle choice but as a critical clinical intervention.
With the healthcare system bearing the brunt of these diseases, who better to set an example and blaze a trail for society to follow than its future workforce. The scheme will also educate these future healthcare professionals so that they will be able to implement this newly acquired knowledge and experience upon the general public, creating a powerful chain reaction.

Education
In cooperation with the Birmingham School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, we are going to provide a lecture-based teaching symposium on Wednesday 13/11/2013, in which we will cover all aspects of physical activity as a healthcare tool, from the benefits and guidelines of physical activity to how to implement this knowledge in the healthcare setting.
BeingTheChange
We have worked in conjunction with FitnessFirst and the Munrow Sports Centre to provide an exclusive tailor-made package to the medical school's students and staff.
There will be BeTheChange specific classes at the FitnessFirst facility, a free week-long gym pass to all at the facility, free group personal training on the Vale's 'trim-trail' among many other services. We hope that this will encourage both staff and students to get active, and reap the undoubted rewards that exercise offers.
In turn, we hope that these rewards enable the students to personally advocate medicine as the proactive healthcare tool it has the potential to be, and as Hippocrates himself foresaw it to be many years ago.
